Chapter 11

“Brooke, thank you for coming out to meet this wedding planner with me. Farrah was supposed to come but she flew out to Devin's game. I don't know what the hell I'm doing. I just want this to be done and over with.”

“You don't sound happy to be getting married.” Brooke looked at me sideways.

“No, Brooke, I am. I just don't need all the extra shit that comes with it,” I said as my wedding planner, Jenn, walked up. She was supposed to be the best in Miami. I just hoped that she didn't need much from me.

“Hey, girl, hey!” Jenn kissed me on the cheek.

“Hi, Jenn. This is Brooke. She's my other bridesmaid.”

“Hi, Brooke. You're a singer, right? Are you going to be singing at the wedding?”

“Umm, I don't think so. Well, at least Austin didn't ask me to.” Brooke looked at me.

“No, you don't have to sing. So what's this place?” I asked Jenn referring to the building we were in front of.

“Well, this is the Marilyn Building. It's one of my favorite venues. I'm sure you'll love it. Let's head inside.”

I could hear all the “oohs” and “aahs” from Brooke, but I wasn't completely engaged. I was too busy on my phone.

Darron: I was talking to my mom and she told me I should leave this shit with you alone.

Me: What is there to leave alone, Darron?

Darron: This so called friendship. Who do you think you're fooling? We can't be friends.

Me: Can't we try harder?

Darron: I can't watch you marry ole boy.

Me: So you don't want to be my friend?

Darron: Naw.

Me: So just like that, we're not friends? You were talking big shit to Tyreek and now this?

Darron: Why do you seem so hurt?

Me: BECAUSE I AM!

Darron: It's what's best for me.

I put my phone into the pocket of my hoodie. “So how much is this place?”

“It’s eighteen thousand dollars, and that includes the bar and food. You just have to do the decor and DJ.”

“How about this?” I pulled out my checkbook. “Book it. Find me a DJ, someone hot. The colors are white and silver with diamonds. Just make it elegant. I'll email you the guest list and seating chart, but I don't have time for anything else.” I wrote Jenn a check for twenty-three thousand dollars. “If you need more let me know, but that should be enough to get started. I want receipts. Come on, Brooke, let's go. I need a damn drink.”

In the car Brooke asked, “What's wrong?”

I broke down crying. “Darron just ended our friendship. I didn't know that it would hurt so much, but it does.”

“You're in love with him, aren't you?”

“I don't want to be, Brooke. I love my fiancé, but I feel like my soul calls for Darron. It's not fair.”

“I know Darron. I know how he feels about you. I knew before I even met you because I heard his music. But it's not fair to have him sit front and center while he watches you be happy with some other guy.
